WaterfallThe oriental zone of Asturias is no doubt the most beautiful and peculiar of the whole region, for the nearness of the littoral and the important elevations of "Picos de Europa", with heights around 2.500 metres and few kilometres away from the sea. But besides, the oriental valleys presents such a variety of landscapes, autochthonous forest, plethoric oaks, chestnut trees and beeches, which offer magnificent opportunities to combine trekking and mountains with the presence of thiny sand beaches, which goes from the most quiet coves to the most extensive and urbanised sandbanks.

"Picos de Europa" are the principal natural attraction of the area, with the National Park as reference, lakes (Enol and Ercina) and Covadongas Basilica (with its entire environment) as point of tourist attraction. The Covadongas National Park was the first of its category created in Spain as protected environment, and it occupies the western clump of the peaks, with tops that exceed 2.300 meters. The landscape is mountainous, splashed with creeks, lagoons and fountains, as well as proper species of the autochthonous wildlife, as the "Urogallo", fox, wolf, otter or roe deer.

MountainsWe must also mention "Garganta del Cares", were the waters of the river Cares opens up by a narrow step that does the delights for trekking. From Póo de Cabrales to Camareña you can contemplate the peaks and its most mythical top ("Picu Urriellu" or "Naranjo de Bulnes") with a beautiful panoramic sight. Rivers Sella and Ponga are the most outstanding of the region. With gorges of great beauty for which they go down or the precious fertile plaines that are glimpsed in its margins.

The interior saws of the Cuera and especially Sueve (Piloña) stand out for its beauty and for a mythical reference of the "Asturcones", native asturian horses that still graze in the mountains. These peculiar races were highly recognised by the Romans. And we can not forget the precious forest of Peloño, one of the most spectacular beech concentration of the north of Spain.
